Obituary

Elaine Fancy

April 9, 1931 - April 30, 2025

Elaine “Honey” Fancy of Portland, Maine, formerly of Salem, NH, passed away on April 30, 2025 at 94 years old. Daughter of the late Max and Esther (Brown) Marcus, she was born on April 9, 1931 in Haverhill, MA as the middle of three sisters and a large family of first and second cousins, many of whom she remained close with all her life.

It was no surprise to anyone who met her that she went by the nickname Honey, because her sweetness was only matched by her wicked sense of humor, always ready with a huge hug and her famous haystack cookies or banana bread. If you were lucky, you were gifted one of her hand-crocheted afghans. If you were really lucky, you got to pick out the colors.

She spent many years working for the Haverhill public school system before splitting her time in retirement on the shores of Canobie Lake, New Hampshire and near the beach in Clearwater, Florida. She spent her final years in Portland, enjoying the company of her friends at Sable Lodge and being close to her great grandchildren.

Throughout most of her adult life, she always had a Sir Winston or Lady Winifred by her side – one of her many English bulldogs who all invariably were called Winnie. Never were there more spoiled dogs on the planet.

She is survived by her children, Jane (Kevin) Morse of Cumming, Georgia and Lenny (Arlene) Pevna of Gilroy, California; sister Sally (Lenny) Koor. She was Grammy to all, but will be especially missed by grandchildren Jon (Mary) and Allie (Will) Morse, Tailor Pevna, and Katelyn and Christian Fancy, and great grandchildren Cecilia and Nicolai Morse. She is also survived by nieces Estie (Asher) Altman and Cheryl Koor; stepson Brian Fancy; and many cousins. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 36 years, Sumner Fancy, and sister Leona Karelitz.

Burial was private at Children of Israel Cemetery in Haverhill, Ma.
