Stanley Schatz

September 26, 1944 - June 13, 2026

Stanley E. Schatz, 81, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, surrounded by his family. Stanley was born on September 26, 1944 in Lewiston, Maine, the son of the late Joseph and Beatrice Schatz. Stanley grew up in Portland, Maine. A graduate of Deering High School in 1962, Stanley attended Wentworth Institute of Technology, graduating with a degree in architectural design in 1965.

Stan’s life changed on New Year’s Eve in 1960, when his blind date for the JCC dance, Sherrie Koocher, went beyond the dance floor, leading to a lifelong romance and loving family. Sherrie and Stanley married at Temple Beth El in July of 1966 on what attendees still refer to as “the hottest day ever”; most people ended up in the pool, fully dressed.

After an initial role working for the State of Maine, Stan joined the family business at Applicators Sales and Service in 1970. In 1971, the family moved to Bangor, Maine, where he and Sherrie raised their family and were involved in local community activities. In 1984, the family moved back to Portland. Stanley retired from Applicators in 1996.

Stan remained busy in retirement, serving as the Director of the Maine Seniors’ Golf Association from 1998 to 2018, where he enjoyed spending time with his fellow golfers and seniors for 20 years. In addition, he enjoyed helping his good friend, John Gerber, with his Southern Maine Seniors Golf program.

Stanley and Sherrie moved to Florida in 2018, settling at the Wycliffe Country Club in Wellington, where they enjoyed many years of wonderful times and memories with friends and neighbors, walking in the pool and mastering “pool”-ates.

Stanley is survived by Sherrie, his wife of nearly 60 years; three children and nine grandchildren: Eric and Anna Ng Schatz of Zurich, Switzerland, Jennifer and Samuel Goodman of Westborough, MA, and Randi and Bryan Travers of Hudson, MA. His grandchildren, who lovingly called him Grumpy, Jonathan Travers of Enfield, CT, Sara and Jared Segal of Framingham, MA, Seth and Jessica Travers of North Attleboro, MA, Amy Goodman of Arlington, MA, Brooke Travers of Brighton, MA, Dana Schatz of New York, NY, Jack Goodman of Arlington, MA, Adam Goodman of Quincy, MA, and Naomi Schatz of New York, NY. Stanley is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Nancy Schatz of Wellington, FL; brother-in-law Robert Neudel of Newton, MA; and many more loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Susan Schatz Neudel.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 16 at 10:00 am at Temple Beth El, 400 Deering Ave. in Portland. Interment will follow immediately at Temple Beth El Memorial Cemetery in Portland.
