PORTLAND – Milton Ber, 91, a lifelong resident of Portland’s Munjoy Hill neighborhood, passed away on October 2, 2026, at The Cedars. He was the eldest son of Sara Rebecca (née Levi) and Isaac Ber.
Milton graduated from Portland High School in 1953, a time in his life he remembered with great fondness. Following graduation, he worked for Ballard Oil Company on Commercial Street in Portland. In May of 1956, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Japan. He served as Specialist
4th Class and was honorably discharged in May of 1959.
After completing his military service, Milton began a career in public service with the U.S. Treasury Department, serving as a Taxpayer Assistor with the Internal Revenue Service. He later worked for the Federal Government with the Social Security Administration. In May 1966, he received a letter of commendation recognizing his courtesy, tact, and polite firmness—qualities that reflected both his professionalism and his character.
Milton was deeply devoted to his mother, Becky, and shared a close and enduring bond with his brothers, Davey and Stanley. He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, particularly his daily crossword puzzle and conversations with Stan. Selfless and kind, Milton never asked for much. His greatest wish was simply to be remembered as a good person.
Those who knew Milton will remember his wonderful sense of humor, quick wit, and giving nature. He was especially beloved by the staff at the Osher Inn, who came to consider him family, providing extraordinary care and compassion in his later years.
Milton is survived by his younger brother, Stanley, of Silver Spring, Md., and Bradenton, Fla. He was predeceased by his brother, David R. Ber, of Portland, Maine.
Milton lived a quiet and unassuming life, but his kindness and the warmth he brought to those around him will not be forgotten. He will be remembered just as he had hoped – as truly, a good person.
Arrangements are entrusted to Portland Jewish Funeral Home.
